I'm going to start today's story quite simply; I shared tea with a friend. That's it. The tea may have changed her life forever and I could not be more convinced that divine intervention is real. The tea bag I gave to a friend read "Love is an experience of infinity," which hit her hard. She has been feeling empty, lonely and genuinely sad. So then, I read mine, "Use your energy to build, not to destroy." I looked at her and watched as she contemplated. Her eyes watered up and I knew then that something in her spirit was missing. Earlier that day, she had expressed to me that she had hopes of going to college. At 32 with a 10 year old daughter, it will not be something that is easy for her to do, but I imagine that if she had the means, she would make it work. Late that night, I went to Pastor Reg and his wife, Johanne, to get some more information. I wanted to learn all that I could about my friend so that I could properly argue my case for her. The conversation was intense. I learned about her rough life, her shaky relationship with her daughter's father and her lack of means which creates an inability to grow. It was emotional and overwhelming, but I had a clear idea of what I needed to do.
Our mission is literally to "restore hope" and "transform lives." By hiring my friend, we would actually be doing both. I proposed that we not only hire her, but we find a sponsor for her that would pay for a portion of her education and supply her daughter with the monthly food parcel.
The next morning, I woke up feeling on top of the world, ready to tackle my presentation. But first, Chez asked me if I would like to have breakfast. My friend appeared and Chez invited her to have breakfast too. Of course, I'm pressed for her to join us. I could not think of a more perfect way to allow her some time with Chez before I pitched her case (without her even knowing). We began to eat, made some more tea (obviously), and then started to pray. Chez has such a way with prayer. Her words are compelling and empowering. Before I knew it, she was giving a testimony about her dreams and how they were manifesting before her eyes. She held my friend's hand and asked her about her dreams. To my surprise, she started spilling all of her desires, fears and insecurities and her wish to transform them all into a training center for single women. My heart was smiling. Her passion was pouring out from her soul and I started crying listening to her because I know now that my presentation CANNOT fail! It got better... DIVINE INTERVENTION IS REAL! It came over Chez's heart to help my friend before I even had to mention it. She started expressing exactly how my friend can get help from where and how we will support her goals and make them happen. Finally, they asked why I was crying and I just opened my computer; the presentation was already open! My friend still has no idea what I have done, but she knows something is happening in the room. Everybody's eyes were filled with tears and God was working the way the He does; mysteriously, yet beautifully. My joy is knowing that I have the power and ability to radically change the lives of so many people here in Haiti and it is a blessing to be able to do so. I love that I can make choices that empower and I am led by God each step of the way. My mission is truly an honor.
